Messages arriving late – what to do

Someone texts or calls you, but you only see it when you open PhoneMe? It’s not the app or your internet. To save battery, some phones put apps you haven’t opened for a while to sleep – and then notifications can’t reach them. You only need to change a few settings once.

Step by step

All you need is an Android phone and the free PhoneMe app.

  1. 1On your home screen, press and hold the PhoneMe icon and choose App info (or: Settings → Apps → PhoneMe).
  2. 2Go to Battery (or Battery saver) and choose Unrestricted (on some phones: No restrictions).
  3. 3Xiaomi, Redmi, POCO: on the same screen, turn on Autostart.
  4. 4Samsung: in Settings open Battery → Background usage limits and check that PhoneMe isn’t in Sleeping apps or Deep sleeping apps. If it is, remove it from the list.
  5. 5Huawei, Honor: in Battery → App launch set PhoneMe to Manage manually and turn on all the switches. Oppo, Realme, OnePlus, Vivo: in PhoneMe’s battery settings, allow background activity.
  6. 6Also check that PhoneMe Notifications are on. Finally, ask someone to send you a message while your screen is locked – it should arrive right away.

Tip

Setting names can differ slightly between models. Don’t close PhoneMe with “clear all” in recent apps – on Xiaomi you can press and hold the PhoneMe window in recent apps and lock it with the padlock.

Questions

Why does this happen?

Phone makers (especially Xiaomi, Huawei, Oppo and Samsung) save battery aggressively and put apps you haven’t opened for a while to sleep. A sleeping app doesn’t get notifications until you open it. Big apps like WhatsApp are often on the maker’s exception list – new apps aren’t.

Will my battery drain faster?

Usually you won’t notice a difference. Your phone still saves battery – the only change is that PhoneMe isn’t put to sleep, so it can receive a message or call right away.

Which phone should I change this on?

The one where messages arrive late – the receiver’s phone. The sender’s phone doesn’t matter here.
